The aspect
An opposition occurs when two planets sit directly across the chart from one another, a hundred and eighty degrees apart. The two functions are in polarity: each represents what the other lacks, and neither can be satisfied without denying the other.
What distinguishes an opposition from a square is that it tends to be experienced through other people. Where a square is felt as internal friction, an opposition characteristically arrives as a person who embodies one end of it. Someone with Sun opposite Saturn may keep encountering restrictive authority figures for years before recognising the pattern as their own material arriving in external form.
This makes the opposition the aspect of projection, and also, eventually, the aspect of awareness. Because the tension is visible in relationship, it can be seen more readily than a square, and oppositions are frequently the first thing a person consciously works with.
The resolution is not compromise, which usually satisfies neither planet, but alternation and integration: developing the capacity to occupy both ends rather than living at one and meeting the other in your partners.
Oppositions across the angles are particularly significant, since the Ascendant-Descendant and Midheaven-IC axes are themselves oppositions describing self against other and public against private.
How it feels
An opposition feels like being pulled in two legitimate directions, and very often like a recurring conflict with a specific kind of person. The characteristic experience is meeting the same argument in different relationships across a life, and only much later noticing that the common factor was present in every one of them.
Working with it
The move with an opposition is to reclaim the end you have been outsourcing. Ask which of the two planets you identify with and which one keeps arriving as somebody else, then deliberately develop the disowned function. Relationships tend to improve markedly when a person can supply both ends themselves rather than requiring a partner to carry one.
