The planetary function
What Mercury describes.
Mercury never travels far from the Sun, which is structurally significant: your thinking is always in the vicinity of your identity, and a substantial portion of what any of us believes is downstream of who we need to be. Mercury in the same sign as the Sun produces someone whose thoughts and self are hard to separate; Mercury in the adjacent sign produces a more useful gap, where a person can examine their own position from slightly outside it.
The sign placement describes the texture of thought rather than its quality. Mercury in Aries decides quickly and revises later. Mercury in Taurus reaches conclusions slowly and does not move off them. Mercury in Pisces, traditionally in fall, thinks associatively and non-linearly, which is a genuine disadvantage in a spreadsheet and a genuine advantage in a poem. The traditional dignities describe fitness for a particular kind of reasoning, not worth.
The retrograde period has acquired a cultural life far larger than its technical meaning. What actually occurs is an apparent backward motion from Earth's perspective, three or four times a year, and the traditional association is with review, revision and the resurfacing of unfinished business. The popular version, in which technology fails and contracts should not be signed, is a considerable expansion on the source material. It is worth knowing what the tradition says and worth being honest that the modern anxiety around it is disproportionate.
Mercury also rules exchange in the commercial sense, which is why it governs both the negotiation and the thief. It is the most morally neutral body in the chart: it describes capability with information, and information can be used to illuminate or to mislead with equal facility.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Mercury asks you to say what you actually mean, and to find out whether what you think is true. It requires honest exchange rather than fluent performance, which is a real distinction, since Mercury is entirely capable of producing persuasive material it does not believe. Its second demand is curiosity maintained past the point of comfort: continuing to ask when the answer might be inconvenient, and remaining genuinely open to a correction rather than merely appearing to be. Mercury is the planet most easily used to avoid the thing it was given to you to examine.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Mercury shows in someone whose primary mode is verbal or analytical: they think out loud, need to articulate something to understand it, and are usually the person who notices the flaw in the argument. It is emphasised when Mercury sits on an angle, rules the chart, or when Gemini, Virgo, the third house or the sixth house are heavily occupied. Such people frequently work with words, systems or data, and often report that a day without interesting input feels physically uncomfortable.
