The planetary function
What Venus describes.
Venus has two rulerships that look unrelated and are not. In Taurus it governs the sensory and material: touch, taste, comfort, money, the physical pleasure of a good thing. In Libra it governs the social and relational: fairness, aesthetics, the negotiation of two people's preferences into something both can live in. Both are the same function, which is evaluation. Venus decides what is worth having, and then arranges for it.
The sign placement describes how a person attracts and what they are attracted to, and these are frequently different questions. Venus in Capricorn values competence and security and may present itself as reserved and self-contained. Venus in Aquarius values independence and finds conventional romantic display faintly embarrassing. Reading Venus accurately usually explains a pattern in someone's relationships that they have found genuinely confusing.
The financial dimension is real and underused. Venus governs not the accumulation of money, which is Saturn's territory, but your relationship with having it: whether spending is pleasurable or anxious, whether receiving is comfortable, whether you undercharge. A great many financial difficulties turn out to be Venus difficulties in a practical costume.
Venus retrograde, occurring roughly every eighteen months, is traditionally associated with the review of relationships and values: former partners resurfacing, a reassessment of what you thought you wanted. It is less commonly discussed than the Mercury version and considerably more interesting, since it operates on material most people would rather not revisit.
The traditional fall in Virgo describes a genuine tension: Venus wants to accept and enjoy, Virgo wants to improve, and the combination can find it difficult to leave a good thing alone.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Venus asks you to know what you actually value rather than what you have been told to want, which is considerably harder than it sounds and takes most people until their thirties. It requires you to permit pleasure without earning it first, and to be honest about attraction rather than constructing a more respectable account of it afterwards. Its harder demand concerns worth: Venus asks what you believe you are worth receiving, since almost everyone's relationships and finances turn out on inspection to be organised around that private figure rather than around anything external.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Venus shows in someone with a marked aesthetic sensibility and considerable ease in relationship: they are pleasant to be around, notice beauty, and often smooth situations without appearing to work at it. It is emphasised when Venus sits on an angle, rules the chart, or when Taurus, Libra, the second house or the seventh house are heavily occupied. Such people frequently work in design, the arts, hospitality or anything involving taste, and often find genuinely ugly environments harder to tolerate than they can easily explain.
