The planetary function
What Mars describes.
Mars is frequently reduced to aggression, which misses most of it. Its actual function is the assertion of a separate self: the capacity to want independently, to refuse, and to take an action that somebody else may not like. Everything the planet governs proceeds from that.
The sign placement describes the style of pursuit, and the range is wide. Mars in Aries acts immediately and directly. Mars in Libra, in detriment, finds naked assertion genuinely uncomfortable and pursues through charm, negotiation or occasionally through provoking someone else into acting first. Mars in Cancer, in fall, protects rather than attacks and is at its most formidable defending someone else. None of these is a better Mars. They are different mechanisms, and the traditional dignities describe how easily the planet can operate rather than how effective a person is.
Anger is where most Mars difficulty concentrates. A well-functioning Mars gets angry proportionately, says so, and is finished. Where the planet is suppressed, usually through early instruction that anger was unacceptable, it does not stop operating. It relocates: into sarcasm, into chronic lateness, into an enthusiasm for other people's conflicts, into the specific exhaustion of never once having said the direct thing.
Mars also governs physical energy and libido, and the traditional connection between drive, desire and vitality is not incidental. A person disconnected from their Mars is frequently tired in a way that rest does not address.
In transit Mars marks periods of increased friction and increased capacity. Its retrograde, every two years, is traditionally a poor time to launch a fight and a useful one to work out what you have actually been angry about.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Mars asks you to want something openly and to act on it without first securing everyone's agreement. It requires you to be able to say no, to tolerate someone's displeasure, and to have access to your own anger as information rather than as an emergency. Its harder demand is directness: Mars turned inward or sideways does not disappear but reappears as resentment, passivity, illness or a slow campaign nobody has named. The planet asks that conflict be conducted in the open, where it can actually conclude.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Mars shows in someone with visible drive and a low tolerance for obstruction: they move first, say the direct thing, and are often described as intense before they have done anything intense. It is emphasised when Mars sits on an angle, rules the chart, or when Aries, Scorpio, the first house or the eighth house are heavily occupied. Such people frequently do well in competitive, physical or crisis-driven work, and can find low-stakes environments genuinely difficult to stay engaged in.
