The Moon governs the interior: what you feel before you have decided what to think, what makes you feel safe, and the instinctive responses that arrive faster than reflection. It rules memory, habit, and the particular conditions you require in order to rest. Where the Sun is the self you are building, the Moon is the self you already were at four years old.

The planetary function
What Moon describes.
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the chart and, for most people, the most accurate. It describes the reactions that precede thought: what you do when startled, what you reach for when tired, the conditions under which you can genuinely relax. If the Sun is the direction of a life, the Moon is the weather inside it.
Its sign placement describes what safety consists of for a particular person, and this varies far more than people assume. A Capricorn Moon feels safe when something is under control; a Pisces Moon feels safe when nothing is being demanded; a Gemini Moon feels safe when there is something to think about. Considerable relationship difficulty comes from two people assuming that what settles them would settle the other.
The Moon also governs memory, and specifically emotional memory: not the record of what happened but the record of how it felt. This is why lunar material is so resistant to rational correction. A person can know accurately that a fear is disproportionate and continue to experience it at full strength, because the Moon is not in the business of assessing evidence.
Traditionally the Moon is associated with mothers and with early life, and the honest version of this is that it describes the emotional environment you formed in rather than any particular person. It shows what was available, what was not, and the strategies you developed in response, most of which are still running.
In transit the Moon changes sign every two and a half days, which makes it the source of ordinary emotional weather. Its phases, from new to full and back, remain the most widely used cycle in practical astrology, and are the reason lunar timing survived in cultures that abandoned everything else.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
The Moon asks you to take your own needs seriously as facts rather than as inconveniences to be managed. It requires you to know what actually settles you, to arrange some part of your life around that knowledge, and to stop treating the requirement as weakness. Its second demand is harder: to feel things at the speed they arrive rather than converting them immediately into something more presentable. The Moon does not respond to argument. It responds to being noticed, which is why the most common lunar difficulty is a person entirely fluent in their own psychology and entirely unwilling to be comforted.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Moon shows in someone whose emotional register is immediately legible, who reads a room before anyone speaks, and whose mood genuinely affects the atmosphere around them. It is emphasised when the Moon sits on an angle, rules the chart, or when Cancer and the fourth house are heavily occupied. Such people often work in caring, hospitality or creative fields, and frequently report that they cannot be in a bad environment without absorbing it, which is an accurate description rather than a complaint.
