The North Node describes the direction of growth: the qualities and territory that do not come naturally, that you are inclined to avoid, and that develop you when you move toward them anyway. Its opposite point, the South Node, describes what is already familiar, already competent, and easy to retreat into when the unfamiliar becomes uncomfortable.

The planetary function
What North Node describes.
The lunar nodes are not bodies but points: the two places where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, which is why eclipses occur near them. They are always exactly opposite, and they are read as a pair. Everything the North Node means depends on what the South Node is holding.
The South Node describes existing competence: what you already know how to do, what comes easily, and what you will reliably fall back on under pressure. It is not a flaw. It is genuine ability, and the difficulty is only that it is finished. Growth is not available in that direction because it has already been extracted.
The North Node is the opposite sign and house, and it will feel awkward. A person with the South Node in Virgo and the North Node in Pisces is highly competent at analysis and improvement and is being asked to develop acceptance and trust, which will feel like negligence for some years before it feels like anything else. The characteristic experience of moving toward the North Node is a sense of doing it badly, because you are.
The nodes move backwards through the zodiac and complete a cycle in about eighteen and a half years, which produces the nodal return at roughly nineteen, thirty-seven, fifty-six and seventy-four. These frequently coincide with a change of direction.
A caution worth stating: nodal material is often presented in strongly fated language, and it is more useful to treat it as a description of where development is available rather than as an obligation. Nobody is required to move toward their North Node, and a great many people do so without ever knowing it existed.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
The North Node asks you to go where you are not yet good. It requires you to stop relying on the strength that has always worked, because that strength is the South Node and it is precisely what keeps you where you are. Its demand is uncomfortable by construction: the node's territory will feel unnatural, and the discomfort is the evidence you are in the right place rather than a sign you have gone wrong. Nothing here is compulsory, which is why so many people spend a life avoiding it entirely and never notice.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
The nodes are emphasised when they sit closely on an angle or conjunct a personal planet, particularly the Sun or Moon. Someone with a prominent North Node often has a marked sense of direction that they cannot fully justify, or a persistent feeling of being pulled toward something they are not yet equipped for. Where the South Node is emphasised instead, the person is frequently very good at one thing early and finds it unexpectedly difficult to build on that competence in any new direction.
