It rules originality, technology, collective movements and everything that arrives without warning. It describes where you cannot be governed, and where your life is likely to change shape abruptly rather than gradually.

The planetary function
What Uranus describes.
Uranus is the first planet beyond Saturn and the first invisible to the naked eye, which is structurally meaningful. Everything within Saturn's orbit concerns the known world and its rules. Uranus is the first body that operates outside them.
Because it takes eighty-four years to circle the zodiac and seven years to cross a sign, its sign placement is generational rather than personal. Everyone born within a seven-year window shares it, and what it describes is the area in which that cohort collectively broke with what came before. The house placement is the personal part, and it shows where an individual life is subject to sudden change and where a person is genuinely unable to conform.
Uranian events are characteristically abrupt and characteristically retrospective in their sense. At the time they arrive as disruption; afterwards they are frequently identified as the moment something false ended. The planet does not negotiate and does not give notice, which is why its transits are experienced as external even when the person had been quietly preparing for years.
The Uranus opposition, occurring around age forty-two when the planet reaches the point opposite its natal position, is the astrological substance behind what is popularly called a midlife crisis. Its actual content is a demand for authenticity: the parts of a life adopted for other people's reasons come under pressure, and something usually gives.
The planet's shadow is contrarianism: difference maintained as identity rather than as conviction, and disruption caused for the pleasure of not being predictable. Uranus is genuinely liberating and it is not automatically wise.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Uranus asks you to be genuinely yourself even where that costs you belonging. It requires you to notice which of your arrangements you have never actually consented to, and to be willing to break one. Its demand is not rebellion for its own sake, which is the shadow rather than the function. It is authenticity under social pressure: the willingness to hold an unpopular position, to leave a life that looks correct from outside, and to tolerate the disapproval that follows without immediately negotiating it away.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Uranus shows in someone visibly unconventional, often unable to fit institutional life comfortably, whose biography contains several abrupt discontinuities. It is emphasised when Uranus sits on an angle, particularly the Ascendant, or when Aquarius and the eleventh house are heavily occupied. Such people are frequently drawn to technology, activism, science or the arts, and often report having known from early on that the standard route was not going to be available to them.
