The planetary function
What Neptune describes.
Neptune is the most difficult planet to write about honestly, because its entire function is the removal of clear edges and any clear account of it is therefore slightly false to its nature.
What it does is dissolve. Wherever Neptune sits in a chart, the boundaries are thinner: between you and other people, between what is happening and what you hope is happening, between devotion and self-abandonment. This produces the planet's genuine gifts, which are considerable. Neptune governs artistic imagination, musical sensitivity, spiritual experience and a compassion that does not require the recipient to deserve it. Almost everything valuable that cannot be measured falls under its jurisdiction.
It also produces the planet's characteristic difficulty, which is that the same permeability admits illusion. Neptune's house is the area of life where a person is most likely to see what they want to see, idealise a person or a situation past recognition, and discover the discrepancy considerably later than everyone around them. The planet does not lie. It simply removes the boundary that would have made the lie visible.
Because it spends fourteen years in a sign, Neptune's sign is generational and describes the collective dream and collective blind spot of a cohort. The house placement is personal and considerably more useful.
Neptune transits are typically experienced as a period of confusion in the affected area, in which certainty is unavailable and decisions made feel unreliable. The traditional counsel is to postpone what can be postponed and to be careful about contracts, and the practical version is simply that Neptune periods are poor times to trust your own certainty and excellent times to make something.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Neptune asks you to give something up: a boundary, a certainty, an identity you were holding too tightly. It requires the capacity to be moved, to accept mystery without resolving it, and to extend compassion to people who have not earned it. Its harder demand is discernment, because the planet does not distinguish between transcendence and evasion and will supply either on request. Neptune asks you to keep asking whether what you are experiencing is genuine dissolution of the self or simply a more elegant way of not being present.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Neptune shows in someone unusually sensitive to atmosphere, often artistic or musical, whose boundaries with other people are visibly thin. It is emphasised when Neptune sits on an angle, or when Pisces and the twelfth house are heavily occupied. Such people frequently work in the arts, care professions or the spiritual field, and commonly report absorbing other people's moods without meaning to, along with a lifelong difficulty in identifying which feelings are actually their own.
