The planetary function
What Pluto describes.
Pluto's astrological significance has not diminished with its reclassification as a dwarf planet, largely because astrological meaning was never derived from planetary status. What the body describes is the process of destruction and regeneration: things that end completely and rebuild in a form the earlier version could not have anticipated.
The house placement is where a life undergoes this repeatedly. It is the area a person cannot approach casually, where the stakes always feel total, and where they are likely to experience several complete demolitions across a lifetime. It is also, characteristically, where they hold the most genuine power, since capability of this kind is usually built out of survived material.
Power is Pluto's central theme and the most useful lens for reading it. The planet's area shows where a person is either unusually powerful or unusually preoccupied with somebody else's power over them, and frequently both in sequence. Control, compulsion, obsession and the refusal to let go all belong here, as does the eventual capacity to release something that cannot be kept.
Because Pluto spends decades in a sign, its sign is deeply generational and describes what an entire cohort was collectively required to transform. The house and aspects are the personal dimension.
Pluto transits are the slowest and most thorough in astrology, often lasting years, and are usually described afterwards as the period that changed everything. They do not respond to management. The tradition's honest counsel is that the only real choice available is whether to participate in what is happening or to be moved by it regardless.
What it asks of you
A living demand.
Pluto asks you to look at what you have buried and to let it change you. It requires honesty about power: where you hold it, where you surrender it, and what you actually do when you have it over somebody else. Its demand is not gentle and does not negotiate. Pluto removes what has been outgrown whether or not you have agreed to release it, and asks only that you participate consciously rather than being dragged. What survives the process is generally the part that was real.
When prominent
When the volume is raised.
A prominent Pluto shows in someone with visible intensity and psychological depth, who is rarely satisfied by surface accounts and often makes others slightly uneasy without doing anything. It is emphasised when Pluto sits on an angle, or when Scorpio and the eighth house are heavily occupied. Such people frequently work in psychology, investigation, medicine, finance or crisis situations, and their biographies tend to contain at least one period of total reconstruction.
