Natural sign and ruler associations are teaching conventions. Houses are calculated from birth time and location, not assigned by sign alone.

The life domain

Where the chart becomes concrete.

The fourth house begins at the Imum Coeli, the lowest point in the chart, and it governs everything at the base of a life: where you came from, where you live, and the version of yourself that only appears behind a closed front door.

It describes the family of origin and, more precisely, the emotional conditions of early life: what home felt like, what was expected, what was not permitted. This is frequently the most private material in a chart and the least visible to anyone outside it.

The house also covers the actual home in adulthood, property, and the sense of having somewhere to return to. People with heavy fourth-house placements often have an unusually strong relationship with a specific place, and can find rootlessness genuinely destabilising in ways that others underestimate.

Traditionally the fourth is associated with one parent and the tenth with the other, though the assignment is disputed and it is generally more useful to read the fourth as the private, containing parent and the tenth as the public, demanding one, whoever occupied those roles.

The sign on the cusp describes the emotional register of home. Capricorn here suggests a household organised around duty and expectation; Sagittarius here suggests one that moved, travelled, or held its beliefs loudly.

The fourth is also the house of endings in the traditional system: the end of a matter, and the final part of a life. It is where things return to rest.

A common question

What if this house is empty?

An empty fourth house does not indicate an absent family or a rootless life. Read the cusp sign for the atmosphere of home and origins, then follow its ruler to see where that early material continues to operate, since fourth-house patterns are rarely confined to the house itself.
