The tenth house begins at the Midheaven, the highest point in the chart, and governs what you are known for: career in the sense of a vocation rather than a job, public reputation, standing, and the role you occupy in the world beyond your private life.
The distinction from the sixth house matters. The sixth is the daily work; the tenth is what it adds up to and what people would say you do. A person can be visible and admired in the tenth while finding the sixth relentless, or can have a quiet public profile and a deeply satisfying working day.
The house also covers authority: your relationship with it, and eventually your own. It describes what happens when a person becomes the one others answer to, which many people find considerably more uncomfortable than they expected.
Traditionally the tenth is associated with one parent, generally the more public or demanding one, and it often describes the expectations a person was measured against and whether those were ever formally withdrawn.
The sign on the Midheaven is one of the most practically useful points in a chart for questions about direction. Pisces here suggests a vocation involving imagination or care and a genuine dislike of conventional ambition; Aries here suggests something that requires going first.
Planets in the tenth are public. They are seen, commented on, and form part of a reputation whether or not the person intended them to.

An empty tenth house does not indicate a life without ambition or achievement, and this is one of the most anxiously misread empty houses. Take the Midheaven sign for the shape of the vocation, then follow its ruler: where that planet sits describes what the career will actually be built out of.
