Natural sign and ruler associations are teaching conventions. Houses are calculated from birth time and location, not assigned by sign alone.

The life domain

Where the chart becomes concrete.

The second house governs what you have and what you consider worth having. Its most obvious subject is money in its personal form: earned income, possessions, and the resources you control directly, as distinct from anything shared, which belongs to the eighth.

Its less obvious and more useful subject is worth. The second house describes what a person believes they are entitled to receive, and that private figure turns out to govern a remarkable amount of behaviour: how much is charged for work, whether a gift can be accepted without discomfort, whether earning enough ever produces the feeling of having enough. Financial difficulty frequently traces back here rather than to any question of income.

The house also covers values in the plain sense, meaning the things you would not trade. These are rarely stated and are visible in how time and money are actually spent rather than in how anyone describes their priorities.

The sign on the cusp describes the manner of acquiring and holding. Aquarius here earns unconventionally and is faintly uninterested in security; Cancer here treats money as protection for people rather than as a score.

Planets here intensify the material dimension of a life. Saturn in the second frequently indicates early scarcity and eventual competence with resources. Neptune here can indicate an unclear relationship with money in either direction: generosity without records, or a persistent difficulty knowing what anything should cost.

A common question

What if this house is empty?

An empty second house does not indicate poverty and is extremely common. Read the sign on the cusp for the approach to resources, then locate its ruling planet: the house that planet occupies usually shows where income actually comes from and where value is genuinely placed.
