Libra opens the second half of the zodiac, and the shift is significant: the first six signs are concerned with developing a self, and Libra is the first to be concerned primarily with somebody else. It is cardinal air, which means it initiates through relationship, and Venus rules it in her social rather than her sensory expression.
The fairness is genuine rather than performed. Libra has a real and quite unusual capacity to hold two opposed positions with equal seriousness, to see the merit in an argument it disagrees with, and to construct a resolution that neither party would have reached alone. This makes the sign a natural mediator and a considerable asset in any room where two people have stopped listening.
The aesthetic dimension is not incidental. Libra is genuinely affected by its surroundings, and disorder, ugliness or discord register physically. The sign will arrange a space, defuse a tension or adjust its own presentation for the comfort of the room, often unconsciously and often at some cost to itself.
The difficulty is the same faculty applied to its own life. Libra is among the most naturally partnered signs: attentive, considerate, romantic, and genuinely interested in the other person's experience. It puts real effort into the relationship as a thing in itself. The difficulties are conflict avoidance and self-erasure: Libra will accommodate for years rather than raise something, then find that the accumulated accommodations have removed most of its own preferences from the relationship. Libra excels where relationships are the work: negotiation, client management, law, design, HR, anything requiring the ability to hold competing interests in view simultaneously. It creates a genuinely pleasant working environment and is often the person who makes a difficult team functional. Its weakness is decisiveness under time pressure, and a tendency to seek consensus past the point where consensus is useful.
