The twelfth house is the last, sitting just above the Ascendant, and it governs everything that operates outside conscious awareness: the unconscious, dreams, private material, and the patterns running in a life that the person themselves cannot see.
It has an unhelpful traditional reputation as the house of self-undoing, sorrow and hidden enemies. The accurate version is less dramatic. The twelfth describes what has not been made conscious, and unexamined material does tend to cause difficulty, which is where the reputation came from. The house is not a sentence and should not be read as one.
It also covers solitude and retreat in their genuine and valuable forms: the need for time entirely alone, the interior life, contemplative and spiritual practice, and any work done away from an audience. Many people with strong twelfth-house placements require considerably more privacy than they can easily justify to others.
Institutions are traditionally twelfth-house matters, meaning places set apart from ordinary life. Hospitals, monasteries and similar settings belong here as environments of withdrawal rather than as predictions about anyone.
The sign on the cusp describes what a person tends to keep out of view. Leo here may hide a considerable desire to be seen; Capricorn here may privately doubt a competence nobody else questions.
Planets in the twelfth are strongly felt and poorly displayed. They often operate for years before the person can name them, and frequently emerge in the second half of life.
